My Teaching Philosophy

Learn more about what I do

Within the inclusive environment of my studio, I provide my students with functional voice training that promotes longevity.  I help them build reliable technique to prevent their artistic endeavors from being hindered. I work to introduce my students to a variety of genres and styles and encourage them to have varied repertoire. I foster independence in my students so they can be responsible for their continued growth. I believe anyone can sing and should be given the opportunity to explore their voice.

Curriculum

I offer weekly lessons that can go on indefinitely, or lesson programs with a set number of lessons. Weekly lessons allow flexibility in what goals are set and how we work towards them. Programs are a set of lessons with specific goals in mind. These are different from regular lessons because we will be less flexible on the content of their lessons. Instead of letting students pick their own repertoire, they will be assigned songs. TRVS programs are designed to prepare a young singer for auditions as well as jump start their technique. Students will be expected to work towards attainable goals we will set together. Their practice time will be more structured with checkpoints along the way.

(Lessons take place via Zoom with some in person lessons depending on the city I am living in.)

Expectations

My goal is to cater to each child based on their learning style and make lessons doable within the demands of their daily lives. Students will establish practice expectations with Tess based on what they think is reasonable while remaining challenging. Students enrolled in a program will have more structured lesson requirements while remaining manageable. This will entail practice logs and assigned repertoire as well as specific ear training checkpoints and theory quizzes.
Students are expected to meet the expectations we set together.
Students will be given sheet music and other learning materials and are expected to bring them to lessons and use them in their practice.
